Board games function as cultural artifacts that shape our collective understanding of history and society, making the inclusion of diversity essential for authentic, cohesive world-building, especially in a setting of humanity's distant future. \n\nVisible representation signals belonging, aiming the game toward its potential audiences. Moving beyond limiting, repetitive tropes of buff and tough men and slender women allows designers and artists to create richer, more nuanced, and imaginative worlds. I suspect the only people that will click these links are the ones who already find representation important, but here are some articles [1](https://analoggamestudies.org/2018/12/assessing-gender-and-racial-representation-in-top-rated-boardgamegeek-games/), [2](https://www.wargamer.com/board-games/wife-board-game) that could help to convince you about representation in our hobby. I would also love for BGG forums to drop all the comments about representation, and the way to achieve that is to accept and implement representation, which will do much more good than just cleaning up the forums.\n\n* 12 \n* Give GeekGold 12 geekgold \nTip with GeekGold\n\n 0.01 GeekGold 0.02 GeekGold 0.05 GeekGold 0.25 GeekGold 1 GeekGold 5 GeekGold Other Amount w/ Message \n\n* Reply \n* Quote \n* More Options Report Un-report \n\n[](https://boardgamegeek.com/)\n\nThis post has been removed by a moderator - Disruptive\n\n[](https://boardgamegeek.com/)[](https://boardgamegeek.com/) User actions menu[](https://boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/58237)[](https://boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/2835)[](https://boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/20308)[](https://boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/55660)[](https://boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/38210)\n\n## [Chet C.](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/Cheddarific)\n\n[@Cheddarific](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/Cheddarific)\n\n[@Cheddarific](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/Cheddarific)\n\n[May 19](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/article/47699695#47699695)Full Date\n\nLast things I'll say about representation here: \n\n- I'm happy to see Creardo and Francesco De Benedittis be sure to include people from various races, genders, cultures/religions, etc. It's clear that an effort was made, and I give them kudos. To the complaint that all the women are fit: yes they are. And seem to be significantly younger than the men and with less outward signals of accomplishment/leadership. But I think this speaks to society more than the particulars of this publisher/artist, who obviously went out of their way to include a diverse set of characters.\n\n- Regarding the scourge of anthropomorphic animals, it's notable in the article I shared above marked \"1,\" there were tons of men on the covers of BGG top 100 game boxes, but that there were more depictions of animals and aliens than of human women. Really strange that people would rather draw, publish, and buy games with animals than with women.\n\n* 3 \n* Give GeekGold 0.05 geekgold \nTip with GeekGold\n\n 0.01 GeekGold 0.02 GeekGold 0.05 GeekGold 0.25 GeekGold 1 GeekGold 5 GeekGold Other Amount w/ Message \n\n* Reply \n* Quote \n* More Options Report Un-report \n\n[](https://boardgamegeek.com/) R User actions menu\n\n## [@ReviewsInLess](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/ReviewsInLess)\n\n[May 19 (edited)](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/article/47699725#47699725)Full Date\n\n Michael T @ariochRN \n\n T. Nomad @tommynomad \n\nGender stereotypes are unfortunate though: did Asimov's trilogy specify that 70+% of humanity were male, and that all the women were a size 4?\n\nYou’ve never read the books then? \n\nIt’s been many years since I read them, but the only female character I can remember clearly was some scientist-type’s daughter who was painfully upset at not being listened to and fled to her bedroom to bite her knuckle and cry into her pillow. I think there was one other woman in one of the books when the Mule turned up.\n\nMost male characters seemed to be pipe-smoking intelligent heroic characters who definitely weren’t Asimov in disguise.\n\nGender stereotypes is putting it mildly \n\nThe books are an enjoyable read, but they are definitely of their time and (imo) haven’t aged as well as the Dune series.\n\n———\n\nLove the artwork shown so far, I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one!\n\nIt's very interesting to see the evolution in his works on how he writes female characters. To think that the person who wrote _Caves of Steel_ and the person who wrote _Nemesis_ are the same person is very interesting to me! Shows how people can change their mindsets over time. Even in Foundation, we see this play out between those written earlier and those written later.\n\nA lot of the way he was writing women in the beginning was very typical of the era, the stereotypes at play in the Robot trilogy are very reflective of 1950s American culture. It's also important to note he was raised by Orthodox Russian Jews, which had pretty strong traditional gender roles (not that it's a perfect representation by any means, but think of _Fiddler on the Roof_) I always find it fascinating how much science-fiction written about the far future ends up being a reflection of the time in which it was written. I remember being a child and finding an old sci-fi book from the 60s at the library that was about a future moon colony - established in 1997!\n\nAs for the Dune series, I think the first two books age reasonably well. I think after that it's pretty much precipitous downslope, God Emperor of Dune is extremely bad. But also, I don't necessarily know how important it is to me that the social ideals reflected in older literature need to age into modern sensibilities. I would also love for BGG forums to drop all the comments about representation, and the way to achieve that is to accept and implement representation, which will do much more good than just cleaning up the forums.\n\nTo those unaware, the author clarified the game is based on the novels in the comment section a week or so ago. The game had a \"loosely based on Asimov's foundation series\" for a year because the author was still trying to get the rights from Asimov Estate or whoever actually have the rights to make this a licensed game.\n\nNow that we are on the same page that the game is based on the books, aren't you kind of missing the point of the foundation novels? The point of those novels is the decline and collapse of a galactic empire (Roman Empire), one man's plan to combat this problem using pyschohistory , preserving science etc, \n\nthe appearance of the mule which throws everything out of calculation, and then the discovery of a 2nd foundation filled with mind control psychologists, serving as the secret manipulating force behind the first foundation.\n\n It doesn't matter how much representation they have if the game completely disrespects its source material or the game isn't fun. Would it be nice to have someone look like me or believed what I believed in a game? Sure it'd be nice. Would I be offended if there wasn't? Not really since I just want a good game that looks good. Would I be offended if a character who had the same appearance, cultural background and belief as me was shoehorned into a game with the sole goal of diversity? Starting with presenting the illustration is just asking for some of the criticisms we see here. Or at least, if you are trying to attract gamers most interested in how it looks by promoting it art-focused, then expect to get backlash about things like diversity of representation. I want to see info about gameplay and how it represents the IP and don't care much at all what the avatar art looks like. \n\nI also tend to treat games with IP as having a higher hurdle to jump. While I understand many fans of an IP will be attracted to buy a game because it has their favorite IP and publishers are banking on that boosting sales vs using a non-licensed theme, for me if it's a favorite IP of mine there is a good likelihood the game won't really live up, especially if it's the first game to use that IP (e.g. I don't care if the 100th LotR game fails to respect the IP much). \n\nAs far as representation for my game avatar, I tend to pick opposite of myself: non-human > woman > child of any gender > man. I mean, I would pick R. Daneel Olivaw in a Foundation game, if given the choice. I love that game, too, but it also requires (at least for our group), exactly six people, all of whom need to know and love the Dune universe, and who have _several_ hours free to play correctly (most of our games clocking in between 3 and 6 hours), and who are also totally okay with some very open-ended interpretations of how certain rules work. A brilliant and engaging **saga** at the table.\n\nBut, when we only have 60-90 minutes, and we want to play something strategic and backstabby and deeply satisfying (in a much shorter time frame) that also scratches the itch of the Dune theme, it's Imperium all the way down the line for us. It's efficient and engaging and interactive and edgy. And, for us, the perfect blend of strategy and theme. \n\nAnd when I play as Paul, I'm not thinking about counting things to pay for other things. Please re-read that sentence again before you continue on. It does a fantastic job translating the IP into an engaging worker placement deck builder with a race to 12 VP. \n\nBut Dune has no business being a worker placement deck builder with a VP race. You could also translate Dune into mancala and it might be the best version of mancala and a really fun game, but likely won't capture the essence of Dune. \n\nThe core plot points of Dune Imperium involve sending agents to secure key resources and block opponents from key resources; building up your capabilities through recruiting new personnel to your team; carefully choosing which cards to play vs which to save for their resources; building up an economy to secure a mentat; ensuring you have the right alliances with NPCs to enable key actions; sending troops into a 1-lane MOBA mini game; racing to reach the VP goal through winning key battles and/or making key card plays. \n\nNone of that features in the book or movies. \n\nHere are the key plot points in the book: Harkonnen and the emperor secretly conspire to eliminate a mutual threat; the Bene Gesserit secret society of space witches have been preparing Arrakis, House Harkonnen, and House Atreides to produce/receive the Kwisatz Haderach for centuries or millennia; Atreides are betrayed from within, ambushed, and essentially eliminated early in the story, leading to a severe imbalance of power; Paul secretly joins an outcast/rebel people whose only goal (making Arrakis a paradise) is directly opposed to the galaxy's only accepted use for Arrakis as a desert spice factory; Paul rises in power within the Fremen and bends their society toward helping him regain the planet; the Fremen begin terror attacks or raids against the villainous Harkonnen to force the emperor's intervention; all the climax parts that I'll leave out but which notably include zero racing - it's about domination. \n\nI see no correlations in plot points except that the houses are in conflict. The old movie Jungle Book may have more in common with the Dune books than Dune Imperium has with the Dune books. Dune Imperium doesn't even have an alliance mechanic between players, which is vastly important for the essence of Dune, or a solid way to make predictable plans within plans in a way that relies on the actions of others. \n\nI'll repeat again: I really enjoy Dune Imperium as a game. \n\nA Foundations game can be fun even if it is really just a returning of Monikers or chess. But it would join the original 1979 Dune game as being MAGICAL and a top game to try if it can instead incorporate the essence of the Foundations books. The plot points from Foundations include psychohistory, which is a scientific prediction model for the trends of civilization; a galactic civilization that cyclically approaches grave Seldon Crises; protagonists who manage to stave off the crisis at the final moment; a rock-paper-scissors system of solutions to each crisis which risks feeling very cheap if it is translated to a VP score threshold or a set collection game; conflict at each Seldon crisis; a second Foundation working toward the same goal but with asymmetry of knowledge and resources; etc. I think many of us are hoping that the Foundations game will hit these same plot points in the same way that the Dune board game did and Dune Imperium did not. To repeat, this doesn't impact how fun or great a game is, but it does impact how thematic it is for most of us. \n\nPraying that this game is not released as Foundations Monopoly. Or Talisman: Psychohistory Edition. Or Sushi Go: Gaal Harden. Or Exploding Kittens: Mule NSFW expansion. They start on an inaccessible fringe of the board (maybe certain political \"war fever\" levels are needed to attack them as they start with a status as 'officially sanctioned by the Emperor' or something) and have few, but powerful units; which get better with their tech upgrades.\n\nThere could be Second Foundation: They start on an unknown planet (kind of like the rebel base in [](https://boardgamegeek.com/#))and have the ability to influence and convert units or technology. And they play cards that actually subvert the moves or tech of other players but they don't really have much unit presence on the board. (And maybe there's an aspect of hidden movement to their actions.)\n\nThere could be the Mule, and his forces.\n\nAnd so on... (Robots? Gaea?)\n\nWhen I read the foundation trilogy a few years ago, while reading i always thought this would be an incredible setting for a boardgame. I imagined it roughly as follows:\n\nThere are four factions (Imperium, 1st Foundation, 2nd Foundation, The Mule) and it could be an area control game with social deduction elements: As in the books, there would be sort of a step by step revelation who is actually playing which faction and on which planet which faction is stationed/inhabited. The game could be divided into four phases and at the beginning of each phase, a faction is revealed (with a fixed sequence based on the books: Imperium, 1st Foundation, The Mule, 2nd Foundation). I’m not exactly sure how this could further be spelled out mechanic-wise… there definitely has to be the possibility to secretly influence areas or secretly build up forces in distant parts of the empire in the phases of the game where your faction isn’t public yet. Well, I still think this sounds great.\n\nBut if I look at the announcement on Gamefound now, one has to fear that it will rather be a „normal“ deckbuilding game with some resource management and area control. Nothing of asymmetric factions and hidden agendas is (yet) to be seen – and the important topic of psychohistory seems to be dealt with by event cards rather than being a core mechanic.\n\nI don’t want to be a killjoy or appear disrespectful. There might still be a great game here, yet I’m not overly optimistic that this very unique story will be translated well into a board game. Please prove me wrong. I would be very happy for you!\n\n* \n* Give GeekGold Tip \nTip with GeekGold\n\n 0.01 GeekGold 0.02 GeekGold 0.05 GeekGold 0.25 GeekGold 1 GeekGold 5 GeekGold Other Amount w/ Message \n\n* Reply \n* Quote \n* More Options Report Un-report \n\n[](https://boardgamegeek.com/) User actions menu\n\n## [Olli Juhala](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/Shader10)\n\n[@Shader10](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/Shader10)\n\n[@Shader10](https://boardgamegeek.com/profile/Shader10)\n\n[May 20](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/article/47703667#47703667)Full Date\n\n Emanuele SZ @CREARDO \n\n[](https://boardgamegeek.com/image/9585896)\n\nThe Vault is about to open.\n\nWe are Creardo, and we are incredibly proud to announce Foundation - the official board game inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, under license by Skydance.\n\nA competitive game of resource management, deck building, political influence and strategic expansion - set in a distant future where the Galactic Empire is collapsing. \n\nThe fate of your faction is in your hands.\n\nThe artistic vision\n\nArt Director Luca Scacchetti imagined a world inspired by the sci-fi paperback covers of the 1970s - illustrations that dissolve the image, leaving space for each reader's personal imagination. I love Asimov but his books are NEVER about the characters, only about the STORY. You could make all his characters women and nothing would change. The characters are just a conduit for the story, nothing else. So this gender debate I find it a bit silly. I mean, sure, it was the 50s, of course he was sexist! We can acknowledge that without burning his books in a pyre, one would hope \n\n* \n* Give GeekGold Tip \nTip with GeekGold\n\n 0.01 GeekGold 0.02 GeekGold 0.05 GeekGold 0.25 GeekGold 1 GeekGold 5 GeekGold Other Amount w/ Message \n\n* Reply \n* Quote \n* More Options Report Un-report \n\n* [](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/2)\n* [Page 1](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/1)\n* [Page 2](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/2)\n* [Page 3 , Current Page](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/3)\n* [Page 4](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/4)\n* [Page 5](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/5)\n* [Page 6](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/6)\n* [](https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3709828/foundation-isaac-asimov-official-board-game-coming/page/4)\n\n# Footer Links\n\n[](https://boardgamegeek.com/)\n\n## Company\n\n* [About](https://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Welcome_to_BoardGameGeek)\n* [Contact](https://boardgamegeek.com/contact)\n* [Advertise](https://advertising.boardgamegeek.com/)\n* [Support BGG](https://boardgamegeek.com/support)\n\n## Policies\n\n* [Community Guidelines](https://boardgamegeek.com/community_rules)\n* [Privacy](https://boardgamegeek.com/privacy)\n* [Terms](https://boardgamegeek.com/terms)\n* Manage Cookies \n\n## Connect\n\n* [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/groups/132851767828/)\n* [Bluesky](https://bsky.app/profile/boardgamegeek.com)\n* [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/boardgamegeek/)\n* [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/user/boardgamegeektv)\n* [Twitch](https://www.twitch.tv/boardgamegeektv)\n* [Discord](https://discord.gg/XyQpPNZAmc)\n\n[Download the BGG App on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1559701270?pt=122806029&ct=bggfooter&mt=8)[Download the BGG App on the Google Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boardgamegeek.app)\n\nGeekdo, BoardGameGeek, the Geekdo logo, and the BoardGameGeek logo are trademarks of BoardGameGeek, LLC.\n\nNo results available\n\nYour Privacy\n\nWe rely on cookies to remember your preferences, login info, analyze website traffic, and serve you personalized content.
