I guess since art and flash sells even poor games it has become the main focus in any publication.\n\nIf ever an IP screamed for a Legacy game element, this is one.\n\nAlso, its pretty telling that they are advertising its based on the TV series, not based directly on the original books. Id rather have a good game whose design choices are made to tell the story of the original IP rather than several usual game mechanics being mashed up to display cool artwork based on a TV show based on the original IP.\n\nI miss the days of games with little or poor art, because they were done on the cheap and even printing art was expensive. Now its about how much can be charged for great looking art and cool plastic pieces, with a game second. \n\nNot that theres anything wrong with improving over the old two tone hex maps and cardboard chits. And there are some amazing games that are both great games and beautiful. But nothing in this announcement makes me think its anything more than an art-flashy IP sale. YET.\n\nLets give them a little time to share more about the game itself. Maybe the game DESIGNER instead of the ART director? Whats their design intent. The mechanics. The rules. Have they even read the books or just watched the show? WHY did they choose certain mechanics? Or is it just a list of the coolest mechanics so they can somehow be thrown together to create a “game.”?\n\nStill, I think any designer looking at the original IP would see this as a golden opportunity for a legacy game with many hidden reveals. When you read the series it is very front-of-mind that Asimov predicted so much of the future, but was completely blind to the internet and over indexed on nuclear power. The art looks like it reflects this!\n\nI was thinking about making a Foundations game, but could not come up with a way to hold true to the story while simultaneously making an interesting multiplayer game. My key takeaway from the series is that civilization evolves in a rock-paper-scissors kind of way, with each era's dominant strategy being disrupted and conquered by a new strategy. For example, religion (techno religion in this case) overcoming military. Then consumerism and trade overcome religion. Etc. Thomas Jefferson is my favorite example of this. He had some really excellent ideas for what America could look like, and he was also an absolutely vile person. \n\nFor media, I think it also matters if the artist is using their art to promote thier terrible ideas. I respect that Dune Imperium is a popular game, and even that it is a great and enjoyable board game, but I do not respect it as a Dune game. It has a clear connection to the Dune Wiki and Dune trademarks, but no connection to the _soul_ of Dune. This stands in great contrast to the original Dune board game or even Dune: A Game of Conquest and Diplomacy or even Dune: the Dice Game (unofficial PnP only), which all have whacky rules that foster betrayals of steady alliances, explosive game-breaking battles, strong asymmetric powers, etc. just like the books and movies. \n\nI think it's possible for a Foundation game to have the _soul_ of Foundation. One way could be leaning into Seldon's psychohistory by having players create their own goals or bids for later in the game. This has been pulled off recently in Arcs with the ambitions, anciently in Dune with the Bene Gesserit's secret prediction, and weekly by every new trick taker that has a bidding element. Imagine a game that balances religion, trade, military, etc. in a way that let's the players gamble on one and then go about trying to make it the most important. Sounds more like a tricktaker than a deckbuilder, but it could work. Another way we could have the soul of Foundation would be to have the players struggling through an impending crisis that effects everyone, and we try to navigate the crisis competitively. This was pulled off well in Evolution: Climate and in How to Save a World, where nobody is really hoping the other players succeed, but you race or jockey for success against a common challenge. Each player could attempt to solve a worsening crisis according to canon or perhaps in their own unique way outside of canon with the first player to overcome the crisis being crowned the winner. \n\nI don't see this theme working wonderfully as a game that leans on VP scoring. But I would have said that about Dune Imperium, which has been on the top game charts for years now, so what do I know?\n\nIf a Foundations board game can be pulled off with the original IP's soul in tact, it will give me hope for a board game about Three Body Problem, which seems impossible. \n\nYou mention the Mule as the first bit of conflict. It's been a while since I read the books, but I remember every Seldon Crisis being set as a conflict between a driving force of society and our protagonist _du jour_. It may not be difficult to have one player harness religion, another military, another trade, another oligarchy, and another the random chaos of a mutant telepath. I guess my hope is that we don't just have Dominion rethemed with Foundation IP where one player leans toward religion, then takes some military cards, then shoots over to trade. I mean, I love Innovation and Shards of Infinity which have those kinds of mechanics, but they don't feel like Foundation to me. Maybe I hold it up on too pristine a pedastal such that no board game will ever be good enough? You don't fear the traison, the religion, the scope in Dune Imperium. You don't do gut moves. You count resources.\n\nI would ADORE for this to be really special, and not just an IP printed on a cool game that doesn't evoque that IP.\n\nA competitive game sounds strange, given how in Foundation they are no opposing forces until The Mule. So, making it cooperative, making one player being the Secod Foundation, like Blood on thr Clocktower Narrator, and the others being in competitive but cooperative mode, would be amazing.\n\nI don't know, I could see a John Company approach, New Angeles aproach, some Churchill or Pericles aproach. Just please lets not do Terraforming Mars aproach, as Dune Imperium did.\n\nI'm with you, friend. I respect that Dune Imperium is a popular game, and even that it is a great and enjoyable board game, but I do not respect it as a Dune game. It has a clear connection to the Dune Wiki and Dune trademarks, but no connection to the _soul_ of Dune. This stands in great contrast to the original Dune board game or even Dune: A Game of Conquest and Diplomacy or even Dune: the Dice Game (unofficial PnP only), which all have whacky rules that foster betrayals of steady alliances, explosive game-breaking battles, strong asymmetric powers, etc. just like the books and movies. \n\nI think it's possible for a Foundation game to have the _soul_ of Foundation. One way could be leaning into Seldon's psychohistory by having players create their own goals or bids for later in the game. This has been pulled off recently in Arcs with the ambitions, anciently in Dune with the Bene Gesserit's secret prediction, and weekly by every new trick taker that has a bidding element. Imagine a game that balances religion, trade, military, etc. in a way that let's the players gamble on one and then go about trying to make it the most important. Sounds more like a tricktaker than a deckbuilder, but it could work. Another way we could have the soul of Foundation would be to have the players struggling through an impending crisis that effects everyone, and we try to navigate the crisis competitively. This was pulled off well in Evolution: Climate and in How to Save a World, where nobody is really hoping the other players succeed, but you race or jockey for success against a common challenge. Each player could attempt to solve a worsening crisis according to canon or perhaps in their own unique way outside of canon with the first player to overcome the crisis being crowned the winner. \n\nI don't see this theme working wonderfully as a game that leans on VP scoring. But I would have said that about Dune Imperium, which has been on the top game charts for years now, so what do I know?\n\nYou mention the Mule as the first bit of conflict. It's been a while since I read the books, but I remember every Seldon Crisis being set as a conflict between a driving force of society and our protagonist _du jour_. It may not be difficult to have one player harness religion, another military, another trade, another oligarchy, and another the random chaos of a mutant telepath. I guess my hope is that we don't just have Dominion rethemed with Foundation IP where one player leans toward religion, then takes some military cards, then shoots over to trade. I mean, I love Innovation and Shards of Infinity which have those kinds of mechanics, but they don't feel like Foundation to me. Maybe I hold it up on too pristine a pedastal such that no board game will ever be good enough? Also as it was said before bad personality doesn't mean that he can't have good ideas in his works. You can see it in Ender saga which is about understanding different races but O. S.
