That makes all the \"but the theme\" arguments absolutely nonsense. We're not just talking about the 70's (or 50's). We're also talking about sci-fi. Imagining futures. We cannot pretend that our own time (2020's) is not the third layer to the art here. So we have 50's-70's-20's. All of these are in conversation with each other. \n\nNot imagining that women might actually have equality in some space future at this point is just space patriarchy. It's stuck. It's not allowed to grow up even marginally. \n\nI could see an argument for creating a character in the game called Isaac Asimov who pretends that all of the mature women in the world are just men because he's in denial about reality. Maybe that would address the theme-worrierers worries.\n\nBut there is something very important that we're ignoring. Here in our layer, int he 20's, it's not like all that sexism is gone yet. Cis straight male artists, when unchecked, keep making this kind of art. This isn't just a question of 70's vrs 20's. This is a question of sexism in the 50's-70's-20's and liberation in the 50's-70's-20's. Making the art sexist now isn't just representing the past, it is making something here and now that says something about our world here and now. \n\nBut... theme. Asimov was a patriarchal sexist pig so we have to make patriarchal sexist art right? \n\nNope. We are artists. Not documentarians. Leave the sexism to a documentary about Asmiov and the Foundation.\n\nArt is a conversation, art is exploration, creativity, innovation. Art is reimagining both the future AND THE PAST. Art is free to make bold statements. And this seems to have been the norm among those artists drawing the covers of sci-fi books in the 1970's. That is the theme which the artists for this game chose. I don't think it's \"stuck\" or not \"grown up\", I think it just reflects the niche which was selected.\n\nIf they'd chosen some other theme - I don't know, maybe \"The Simpsons\" - then most of the characters would have yellow skin.\n\nIf they then featured plenty of characters who didn't have yellow skin in this Simpsons-inspired world, wouldn't that be a bit peculiar?\n\nI don't know if we'll gain anything by debating this further, even though the discussion is interesting in itself. I'd actually be curious to ask about a couple of other things.\n\nSo far I'd only seen the artwork on a small screen and hadn't looked closely. Now that I see the grid of 16 characters on a larger screen, I'm a bit puzzled.\n\nThere's a majority of what looks to me like white males, but there is some diversity of skin colour and a quarter of the characters appear to be female (yes, it's only a quarter, not half.) None of those females is scantily clad, none is in a submissive posture, none is noticeably inferior in social rank to the men depicted - it's a world away from the new box cover of Concordia, for example. Based on the comments in this thread, I would have expected far worse. What is it that I'm missing that has so many people in this thread so upset about the sexism in the artwork? This is a genuine question because I would like to understand better.\n\nSomewhat off-topic: a few other authors have been mentioned in this thread. Terry Pratchett was more fantasy than sci-fi, but the covers of his early books frequently featured scantily clad women. I read once that he always asked the artist, Josh Kirby, not to do it, which only motivated Kirby even more. I've not noticed Pratchett (or Kirby) being heavily criticised for this - am I just not looking on the right forums, or has a blind eye been turned to this overt sexism (maybe because Pratchett remains very popular?)\n\nLastly, regarding Asimov being a patriarchal sexist pig; his Wikipedia page also mentions that he supported women's rights (which doesn't sit well with how he treated them), and believed homosexuality to be a moral right.
